About Puri Rath Yatra

One of the world's oldest and most magnificent religious festivals - celebrated continuously for over 2,000 years

What makes it the world's greatest chariot festival?

The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is held every year on the auspicious day of Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (June–July). Three enormous wooden chariots - Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Lord Balabhadra), and Darpadalana (Devi Subhadra) - are pulled through the grand Bada Danda road by thousands of devotees toward the Gundicha Temple, around 3 kilometres away.

What makes Rath Yatra extraordinary is its universality. The procession is open to all - regardless of caste, religion, or nationality. Pulling the sacred chariot ropes is believed to grant blessings equivalent to a lifetime of pilgrimage.

Recognised globally and attended by over a million devotees each year, this is not just a festival - it is a living, breathing expression of faith that has inspired generations for centuries.

"The Rath Yatra has been described by travellers, historians, and spiritual leaders across centuries as an experience that transcends the ordinary - a sight and a feeling that stays with you forever."

Safety Precautions for Rath Yatra Travellers

Rath Yatra draws over a million people to Puri's streets. A little preparation makes all the difference between a stressful day and a truly divine experience

What to do
  • Carry a valid government photo ID at all times - security checks are common near the temple zone during the festival.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry at least 1 litre of water per person - June–July coastal heat is intense in large crowds.
  • Wear light, breathable cotton in modest styles. Remove footwear before temple entrances and sacred spaces.
  • Keep children and elderly family members close - crowds on peak days can exceed a million people moving unpredictably.
  • Pre-book your return cab before entering the crowd - post-procession cab availability drops sharply.
  • Save your YanSeva driver's contact and share your live location with a family member at all times.
  • Carry a fully charged phone and a power bank - network congestion near the temple can slow calls and maps.
What to avoid
  • Do not attempt to touch or go under the chariot wheels - strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous.
  • Avoid carrying large bags in dense crowd areas - they restrict movement and attract pickpockets.
  • Non-Hindu visitors must not attempt to enter the main Jagannath Temple - entry is reserved for Hindu devotees only.
  • Do not litter on or near the procession route - the sanctity of Bada Danda is taken very seriously by locals.
  • Do not drive yourself during peak procession hours - most roads are closed and navigation without local expertise is near impossible.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food near temple premises - respect local customs during this sacred festival period.
  • Never travel with unverified cab operators - only use GPS-tracked, trusted services like YanSeva.

Travel smart with YanSeva - pre-book your cab so you are never stranded before or after the procession. Our drivers know every festival route, safe waiting zone, and crowd bypass road in Puri.
